According to the Monster Manual, the last sentence in the Water Elemental’s “Whelm” ability should read, “A creature within 5 feet of the elemental can pull a creature or object out of it by taking an action to make a DC 14 Strength check and succeeding.”
In the Encounter Builder/Tracker, it reads, “A creature within 5 feet of the elemental can pull a creature or object out of it by taking an action to make a DC 14 Strength and succeeding.” The word “check” is omitted, making it unclear whether it intends for the creature to make an ability check or a saving throw without having to go back to the Monster Manual to check.
