Using physical books with D&D Beyond

So, if I already have physical copies of books that would add content here for me for character class, species, background options is it my understanding that I would still need to purchase codes on the D&D beyond store to add them to my account here?  

Thanks, that helps.  I also don't understand why not all of the backgrounds available in the 5.5 rules are included.  Do I also need to have the player's handbook included to get all the backgrounds that come with the PH?

You need to purchase (or have access to through content sharing) the Player's Handbook to access any of the content in it that's not also in the Basic Rules.

The only backgrounds included in the Basic Rules are Acolyte, Criminal, Sage, and Soldier.

They're not included because they're not in the Basic Rules—the Basic Rules contains everything you need to play, not everything that is found in the Player's Handbook.
