1) If I multi-class wizard with my artificers, I always take 2 levels of wizard (usually one after the other) to get the archetype. The archetype will depend on my concept/build.
2) One thing I have found, both as a player and a DM, is that in all the times I have DM'd/played to L20 (and they are few) we have stopped play after the campaign reaches L20. This means that though the L20 abilities can be sweet, they may never get used. Thus, a level or two dip into wizard at low levels may be much more useful to you in the long run.
3) In the current Eberron campaign I am playing in, I am a warforged artificer13 (armorer)/wizard-2 (war wizard). This combo is fantastic for a combat based artificer. The DM ran Lost Laboratory of Kwalish (Eberron-based) and I got the use of the Power Armor for a time. That was sweet.
