Question - what is needed to "cause" the activation? spoken word? mental connection? it just happens because magic?
Has this been clarified somewhere else? Tasha's leaves it pretty open ended.
I ask because in a recent session my character was hit with Polymorph while his cannon was in play. Should I still be able to control/activate it?
You can simply do it as a bonus action - you don't need to be able to speak, think, or even use magic (the ability will work in an anti-magic field, for example). You can flavor it however you like.
No, Polymorph replaces your game statistics - while polymorphed, you lose the necessary bonus action.

Makes sense - but good to know a verbal component isn't necessary if say a character is hit with silence, or is paralyzed
