This poll is already running my dudes (and my alchemist is hated in both, sigh, hahaha)
So this is my most recent post in the post on the same topic that's already been running for a year or so (tagged in the above quote):
"I know Im still the (10.8%) minority, but I absolutely adore the Alchemist. Currently lvl18 and without beating my own drum or tooting my own horn, my party would have died and/or failed a dozen times over by this point! Great utility, great healing, great set of options for actions. Im not hung up on the usual 'but I wanna do damage!" I hear about the alchemist, I'm not precious about my spell slots and Im very liberal with my infusions (I do keep one or two for myself, admittedly). My plague doctor is the best character Ive ever played and that may be because when I actually do get to take a break from ForeverDMing and play for a change, I prefer 100% support and utility. Previously it was backline bards, control sorcerers or prep time tomelocks, but I have found the alchemist to suit all those niches in one class, at least for the way I like to play.
This comment is based 100% on personal experience and there is no fact involved. The fun of a sub/class comes completely from what you make of it, RP and strategy wise. I mean, while I've never come across one in the wild, I'm sure there's people who loved their Beastmaster Ranger too. Anyway, thats my 2c in defence of those who'll come at me with stats, facts and minmax chats. haha Carry on, as you were. :)"
There are several people who love phb beastmaster (in this forum) and can show you mathematicaly get decent value out of it. There's even potential for insane power levels if you're taking care to optimize your builds.
Alchemist like phb isn't really about power its about feel or preferred playstyles. They optimize differently but aren't worse by much if at all.
Yep youre only backing up my point! A sub/class' value is and should be rated purely on what the individual makes of it.
Hjalmar Gunderson, Vuman Alchemist Plague Doctor in a HB Campaign, Post Netherese Invasion Cormyr (lvl20 retired) Godfrey, Autognome Butler in Ghosts of Saltmarsh into Spelljammer Grímr Skeggisson, Goliath Rune Knight in Rime of the Frostmaiden DM of two HB campaigns set in the same world.
My personal favorite has been Artillerist but it's the only one I've played in a long term game for the last two years. My gnome had an Armorer as a father and an Alchemist as a mother, and she decided to become an artillerist by taking an interest in firearms. Right now my favorite thing to do is have the Homunculus Servant carry the Eldritch Cannon to turn it into a flying gunship/flamethrower.
Every subclass is played in our friend group, both vanilla and reflavored (my girlfriend plays an Alchemist as a fey sprite who creates powders from plants) and everyone has an absolute blast with it.
I like the Artillerist because when I play an Artificer I like to make things explode with AoE spells and effects. Alchemist is a great option if you need a good party healer, though.
