I have a now 9th level Gaurdian of the Ancients and im looking at multiclassing. I have thought fighter but im not sure if there is a better way to go. We are only using the PHB and Xann's. new to 5E but love it. Any good ideas?
Are you looking to multiclass for a specific power set or for role playing reasons? Mechanically barbarian power sets work well with other martial classes like fighters and monks, but role playing you can make almost any multiclass work as long as you have the base stats required!
More to be a tank and stay the tank. I am always up front and taking hits with not a true healer in the group. We have 1 cleric who feels he has to do as much damage as he can and heals very little. Our other healer is a 1st level something(i really don't know) a 4th level fighter 4th level cleric. So I'm trying to figure out a way to either kill things really fast or just take my survival up. Current stats. Str 18, Dex 14, Con 18, Int 11 (18 from artifact), Wis 12, Cha 10. At level 4 I put 2 points on strength and at level 8 I put 2 points on Con. We opted to use a non-rolling method for stats at level 1. 16,15, 14, 13, 12, 11. Mountain Dwarf race. We are using the feat option but i just went with ability scores so far, so if there is a class and combination that would need a feat at level 12 or level 4 of the new class it is an option. This is my first ever 5e character.
With stats like those, your options are fighter or rogue.
Fighter for second wind healing and fighting style level 1, action surge level 2 and subclass at level 3 are not bad.
Thief gets you expertise and sneak attack at level 1 (grab athletics and be a grapple champ) is not bad. Cunning action at level 2 can maybe help you move around battlefield easier.

If you want to be a better tank, I suggest definitely taking Fighter and going either Battlemaster or Cavalier. The Cavalier is tanky in the same kind of way that Ancestral Guardian, letting you taunt everything you hit in a turn, but limiting it to melee, unlike your Ancestral Guardian feature which is only the first thing you hit, but can be either melee or ranged. Battlemaster is a bit more tactically complex, allowing you different maneuvers like disarming an enemy, maneuvering your allies around to safer positions on the battlefield, parrying attacks to reduce damage against yourself, pushing, tripping, or even giving your allies temporary hp, but they use an expendable resource.

Barbarian weapons generally cannot be used for sneak attack. That being said you can use rapier to stab really really hard AND sneakily. But you cannot with a long sword, great axe, javelin etc etc,
Honestly I do not see alot of value added in multiclasing for you. Your toolbox is solid and straightforward, multiclass seems like it won't deliver a real wow feature for you. And you got some cool stuff coming. Relentless rage and vengeful ancestors comes to mind.
I would say stay the course and continue with ASI for str and con. IMO.
My personal build with the Ancestral Guardian is to do the 3 level fighter dip for Champion crit-fishing with a Half-Orc with a great axe for some huge crit potential and later on GWM for extra attacks out of mooks.
I have to admit that I think about buffing GW style for non d6 weapons and I am using buffed Savage Attacker feature to justify the Great Axe.
But having the second wind, fighting style and action surge seems like a very useful extra tools for a barbarian. You are mostly on the front line and having access to that extra oomph is appealing for me.
To me blocking some damage is enough, I don't value returning some that much but I must admit that it can be very tactical important, like with squishy ranged foes.

Did you mean path of the ancestral guardian?
And what are your ability scores?

I would pick fighter to get what makes fighters so favorable. Although a sneaky barb would be hilarious to see in play lol
