As the title suggests I am in need of some help! The Blood Domain Cleric of the party is going through a rough time in game narratively. His character is having self doubt issues and not believing in himself.
The player and I have spoken about what his character would do and he plans on "venting" to his deity asking for more power so he can "feel useful" within the group. His deity isn't a very pleasant one, it's Umberlee for those that might know her, and I think it might be nice to give him some sort of boon as a sign of her looking after her acolyte. However in my campaign Umberlee is an evil entity and so I think it would make sense that this boon have some affect on him negatively, maybe more narratively than mechanically
I hope that makes sense, if theres any question let me know. I'm struggling to come up with a reasonable response when his character eventually vents and begs to Umberlee
I don’t think evil = mean to her clerics. A god that treats their most fervent worshippers badly won’t have many for very long. As long as the cleric is following the god’s wishes, I’d think they would want their followers to be more effective, not handicap them.
As far as ideas for a boon, I don’t know what blood domain is (some kind of homebrew, I guess?), so I’m not sure I have any thematic ideas to offer there.
Reminder that the Evil alignment does not automatically mean the classic definition of evil. It just means that the creature is selfish first and foremost. Fiends are really the only Evil-aligned creatures who are truly evil, because that's their purpose.
Think of your Umbralee as a god who bestows boons on clerics who can offer her something of equal or greater value in return, rather than out of benevolence like a deity with a Good alignment. Unquestioning and unyielding devotion to furthering her personal goals (rather than the goals of the wider domain) would be a good price to pay for the boon, without being an actual "price".
Having her give a double-edged sword to one of her most devoted followers is bad tactics for both her and you, especially considering the follower is already doubting his service.

The Blood Domain is from the most recent Tal'Dorei sourcebook. Clerics of the Blood Domain are concerned with the lifeforce that sustains creatures, and the need to sacrifice it for a greater purpose.
For an idea of their mechanical themes, Channel Divinity: Blood Puppet uses a creature's main lifeforce (such as blood) to control a Large or smaller creature if they fail a Wisdom saving throw.
