Warcaster is basically required for a Stars Druid to even use a Shield or the Moon Sickle. Without it, you can only hold the Star Map, effectively.
Even with Warcaster, you have to choose between the Moon Sickle or a Shield. You can't have both, which means that using a Moon Sickle comes at the cost of -2 AC

Or you would need to stow the sickle or map basically if you wanted to use the shield.
Thri-Kreens really do make exceptional star druids. You can hold the moon sickle and star map in your small hands, a shield in a big one and still keep one big hand open for somatic components. No war caster needed and you get to hold it all.
If your DM is nice i'd ask them to reflavor Moon Sickle to mirror the Amulet of the Devout that Clerics and Paladins get. So +1 to spell attack and spell save DC (you probably don't need the bonuses to the melee attack part) and instead of the 1d4 healing you get an extra use of Wild Shape once per long rest.
Oh wow I never realized that. Thankfully the moon sickle is in fact a sickle.
Edit: oops you already covered that lol. Me no read good.
It's unfortunate, but the Moon Sickle seems to actually be a bad Magic Item for Stars Druids specifically.
It either means that they lose Guidance and Guiding Bolt (from not holding their Star Map), or that they lose the +2 AC from using a shield.
Unless they have Warcaster feat correct?
Not really, no.

If you stow the Sickle, you lose its bonuses
If you stow the Map, you no longer have Guidance or Guiding Bolt prepared
Both these items require that the Druid is "holding" them to gain said benefits

Thri-Kreens are just exceptional altogether. But that's just my opinion. :)

Yeah I mean of course with DM permission you can get away with anything, and mine personally doesn't make me "hold" my Star Map
Within the confines of RAW, however, it does seem that this magic item *is* worse for Stars Druids specifically
