I had a somewhat crazy idea, and wanted to get thoughts on feasibility and concept from other folks.
As I understand it, the new beast master allows you to flavor or describe your beast companion in any way you wish. What if you described your beast companion as a humanoid? Is there anything stopping you from describing your beast companion as looking like a person — assuming they would maintain the same stats as a “beast of the land”? Could you even describe your beast as looking like your twin sibling (with “markings to indicate supernatural origin”)?
You could even describe them fighting with a weapon, or wearing armor, so long as you’re using the beast of the land stat block, right? Your companion would be as intelligent as an average person, with potentially higher wisdom than most folks. Your beast companion could use all the same skills as you. The only thing they might not be able to do based on the step block is speak.
What questions or problems might arise if I took this approach? What cool roleplaying or synergies might it enable? What else could you do if your beast companion looked like a humanoid of another species or gender?
It shouldn't be a problem to describe your pet in any way you want, as long as you still use the same stat block. Nothing should cause any problems related to game mechanics, though you might have to accept the caveat that your companion is beastly enough to no longer be able to walk on two legs or something so that he can't be mistaken for a normal person.
A fun way make this work would be to play as the Shifter race and say that your twin brother has totally given in to his beast side.

I guess that is the question. Is there anything stopping someone from describing their companions as a human walking on two legs?
Does a human count as an “animal”? Based on quick google search, Homo sapiens are classified as an animal.
They're all of the Beast creature type. You choose a suitable Beast.
