In general, I'd say just use a crossbow and take the Archery fighting style, and either be a Champion or be an Arcane Archer (ask if you can use the arcane archer stuff on crossbows and crossbow bolts as well and reflavour the magic effects as different kinds of bullets) if you don't want to use Matthew Mercer's homebrew Gunslinger. You could also take 1 level of the UA Artificer (Gunsmith) for the Thunder Cannon.

i like linguistics and, well, d&d, obviously. this bio hadn't been updated for 3 years so i figured i'd do that.
I have yet to look at the Artificer, but I intend to at some point. I have too many character ideas and not enough people/sessions to play in... Yeah using the crossbow and bolts with Arcane Archer would be a good way to do it too.

The Artificer is great, you should look at it sometime.
From what I've seen of the Gunslinger, the features for different kinds of bullets are similar to the magic-imbued Arcane Archer arrows, so if not using Artificer, that's the best I can get.

In the campaign I'm in now, we found a fort protected by soldiers with Muskets.
So, that opens the door for my "backup" Halfling Gunslinger character, in case my main one meets an untimely death.
Is there a grit point tracker?
