I am currently playing in a campaign prologue that happens before the main one and we will start and end at level 4. My and the only other player in this campaign are both fighters. He is an echo knight, but the problem is that his int is 14, his str is 15 and so is his dex. He is ungodly unoptimised and doesn’t seem to want to change subclass.
I’m playing a Yaun ti dex samurai with a shield and the duelling fighting style and I’m not sure if I should switch to battlemaster, I really like the advantage and temp health from samurai. But I’m not sure if he would survive without me min-maxing as hard as possible.
Is battlemaster better than samurai at low levels?
It really depends on your personal and the campaign’s play styles. The samurai can give themself advantage, which is nice, but is it necessary with two melee fighters (you should be flanking in most circumstances to give advantage already). I’ve played a battle master through low levels and had a blast with it. There are lots of options to help “save” party members while also adding some damage or damage mitigation (bait and switch, disarming attack, etc.). If you feel you really need to help “carry” the other fighter, then battle master may be the way to go.
Our dm doesn’t like to use flanking rules so making people go prone and fighting spirit are our only ways of advantage. Luckily my character can use a long bow and my dm is changing his stats.
