I get a lot of inspiration for weapon and ability ideas from many video games I've played so definitely encourage you to do try to implement them! It can be a bit challenging to balance but it's definitely fun to brew something up and see it being played in your game
Rope Darts, Meteor Hammers, chain whips, 3 section staffs, and iron rings.
Being reatively new does anyone have any pointers on bringing these weapons to life for my halfling monk, or possibly point me in the right direction to where I could find some data regarding such. Personally I'd love the idea of having a rope dart at the hip and iron rings on both arms acting as a defensive mechanism for when things get a little dicey.
Not really a monk, but I played a dwarven barbarian (battlerager) with the Improvised Weapon feat, with an emphasis on grappling. He would CONTROL the battlefield, grabbing guys, shield bashing, head butting, kicking...he'd even hit one bad guy with ANOTHER bad guy! So much FUN!

For Monk weapons I get inspiration from Soul Calibur series, with characters like Kilik (Quarterstaff), Seong Mi-na (Kensai Monk with Halberd->Naginata), Yun-Seong (another Kensai with Longsword->Chinese Sword), Xianghua (again Kensai with Rapier -> Jian), Maxi (Club -> Nunchaku), Taki (Shadow Monk with Shortsword -> Kodachi)...

Yeah actually the inspiration of the art works lends to many "elemental" "holy" & "necrotic" or even extra blunt, piercing or slashing damage ideas. I could see with DM approval that some of those could easily be adjusted and incorporated into a game. Doesn't have to be overkill but I know many Monk players that would love a little extra "fire" to their punch, even if it was only a D6, it would be the flavor added to the fight that I and they would love.

The Iron Rings for added DC for the Monk that has to block blades would be a very nice touch. Great idea.

That is a perfect question here. This was my intention when I started it up. As a Monk player I wanted to see what creative ideas could be brought to the character in creation. Some of the ones above have been so full of flavor and inspiration to help people bring their Monk vision to full. Not every Monk has to use a Quarterstaff or their fists, even though that is the idea that Monk's depend on their fists more at higher levels, but at lower levels there are martial arts axes and weapons that could be used by the Monk until they reach their higher potential.
I'm a couple days from starting a game playing with a homebrewed Drunken Fist Monk. With the rules were using, at level 3 you gain proficiency with improvised weapons and improvised weapons are now considered as monk weapons. In addition, creatures have disadvantage on Opportunity Attacks against you. Until then its all unarmed attacks and my DM allowed me to have a reinforced drinking gourd that's used as a club, but also has a cloth strap I can use to wrap up an arm or weapon with. Should be fun. But a few ideas for unarmed other than gauntlets would be nice.
Way of Resourcefulness:
3rd level: you are proficient with improvised weapons and scimitars, they count as monk weapons for you and, if the DM agrees that a given improvised weapon could deal damage, it uses a damage die one size larger than the die shown on the monk table.
6th level: when a creature no more than one size larger or smaller than you and that you can see misses you with a melee weapon attack using a weapon other than a dagger, greatsword, longsword, rapier, scimitar, shortsword or similar weapon, you can spend one ki point to grab its weapon; it must make a Strength saving throw or be disarmed. When you use this feature successfully, the weapon you steal counts as an improvised weapon for you until the end of your next turn. Also, your Ki-Empowered Strikes feature applies to improvised weapons as well as unarmed strikes.
11th level: you have advantage on saving throws against traps and other environmental hazards and they have disadvantage on attack rolls against you. In addition, if you expose an enemy to a trap or hazard, they have disadvantage on saving throws against it and it has advantage on attack rolls against them. These effects also apply to environmental hazards that require a character to trigger them, such as boulders.
17th level: whenever you hit a creature with an improvised weapon, the DM will choose one of the effects listed under Open Hand Technique and apply it to the target.

Man, I like that too. But after having played 10 sessions so far with the drunken monk, I think I've never once done anything but use my fists for an attack.
I saw a expanded weapon list someone worked up that had a lot of additional monk weapons(kunai, shuriken, kama, kukri, nunchaku) it had like twenty weapons many with special abilities like tripping or disarming. Can't find it right now but if I do I'll post it on here.

I'm surprised there aren't any sort of cestus that could help out a monk in the damage department.
"A cestus or caestus is an ancient battle glove, sometimes used in pankration. They were worn like today's boxing gloves, but were made with leather strips and sometimes filled with iron plates or fitted with blades or spikes, and used as weapons."
Even if it was just something as simple as upping the monk damage by 1 die

^ those were just tame examples of what I was getting at.....
2d4 slashing damage. Finesse. Martial weapon, usable by monks. Spend a ki point to do your martial arts die as bludgeoning damage on top of the weapon's damage. If your game uses exotic weapons, it's one of those and also has the Light property.

It's not a monk weapon, so the damage won't scale as you level and you won't be able to do your bonus unarmed strike or flurry of blows.
