I've got a fun idea for a Paladin but I want some second opinions.
Basically, I want to make a Centaur Paladin. I've always thought Centaurs are cool and I really don't want to play a Ranger Centaur cause that's too easy. After looking through the classes and the Centaur race, I think they'd make a half decent Paladin!
I think I'd make their character sort of a proper noble character that hates most mortal races since Centaurs are technically Fey! I really want to play up their Fey aspects and make them sort of a sworn warrior of nature and protecting those who can't protect themselves from industrial incursion.
Their Oath I'm thinking would either be Oath of the Ancients because duh. Or Oath of the Conqueror. The Conqueror I could be fun because I'd like to play them as sort of a "reverse" Conqueror. Where instead of going to unfamiliar lands and taking them in the name of the Empire or whatever, they go to known lands and retake them for the Wild or nature or the Fey, etc. That way they'd seem less like a goofy trickster Fey and more like a big, intimidating, brute Fey.
I think it would be fun! It's playing with a lot of tropes and breaking some of them too. The Centaur isn't some bow wielding free spirit. They're a powerful warrior bent on protecting/retaking the lands that they hold dear.
Edit: My Holy Symbol will likely be my god's emblem on my shield. Though there was a pretty rad idea of getting some holy horseshoes...
My question to you guys is does this sound feasible? Does a Centaur Paladin build work? Would Oath of the Ancients be better? Is there something I'm maybe missing?
One other question would be this: how can I play up more of the Fey aspect? What advantages/disadvantages might I be missing about being a Fey instead of a humanoid race?
I'm not near my books but the concept sounds good. There is enough lore out there for centaur "knights" as well as the usual ranger/archer image. Armor up, grab a heavy weapon and wade into battle like a mounted warrior might. If your DM allows it, maybe he'll let you use a lance as if you were mounted. If not, a polearm or two handed sword seems like a powerful option.
As for roleplaying the centaur thing and the fey thing, I'd recommend focusing on being a metaphorical fish-out-of-water. "That's not how we do things in [Fey Land]" in response to be chided for eating off the serving platters or sleeping wherever you fall asleep or drinking heavy spirits (that might also be hallucinogens) or being overly flirtatious or whatever fey traditions you want to assume. And it might be good to emphasize when things are not centaur-friendly like stairs and chairs and how people in [Human Land] are not accommodating and how you had a special centaur-designed chair at every fey tavern.

I love the advice! I hadn't thought about the lance thing but sounds SO COOL! I really want to do that now, and I'm sure the charge ability Centaurs can do would apply to the lance. I've been looking at either a sword and board option for the Centaur or using a two handed weapon. I know I'd run with heavy armor so I figured the sword and shield could be good, but the polearm almost sounds more appropriate? I could probably make good use of a reach weapon too. Of course, I really want to use the Lance now but I wonder if I could use a shield with it too? I think mounted character can use it one handed and I am kind of a mount.
I love the fish out of water idea too! I was already thinking about that, but I'll be sure to complain about stairs more. I'd love to play up some goofy stuff for fun while maintaining a character that's pretty serious. I think this is a good way to do it :D
If you have any other ideas, or optimization tips just lemme know! Thank you!
Well, no Charisma boost, but I guess you factored that in already.
What are you thinking of using as the holy symbol?
If it were me, I would probably play up the aspect of Fey ancestry that would cause a character to adhere to some unusual rules, like being unable to take things from others: you can only buy or be gifted any item. Maybe also add a dietary restriction and a need to keep track of the phases of the moon and perform some kind of ritual during the full moon to maintain your full powers.
Have your horseshoes be your holy symbol ;) but this sounds like a really great theme for a character. I would probably go with ancients for a more natural fit with the fey concept but I tend to like that oath a lot personally. The lance and shield idea would look pretty sweet too as long as your DM let's you pull it off (I would).
I would not allow a Centaur character to be considered a mounted combatant, and it is absolutely not a mounted combatant by RAW. You are literally only considered a mounted combatant if you are actually mounted upon something that is considered a mount. There is very little precedent for allowing things like this, but there is a ton of precedent with the devs shooting it down.
That said, there's nothing wrong with your concept! I had something similar once where the Centaur's armor was specially designed, with an ornamental faux-horse head extrusion, to give the appearance that they were just a normal human riding a plated war horse.

There's a silver-lining with not being mounted too... you can still benefit from the Charger feat as it depends on using your own actual movement speed.
You don't know what fear is until you've witnessed a drunk bird divebombing you while carrying a screaming Kobold throwing fire anywhere and everywhere.
