I know this is an old thread but I just wanted to point out wotc has never answered basic questions about phb features.
They literally threw out most of the phb as bad or having a low satisfaction without ever even figuring out how they work. Many of the phb features had satisfying interpretations but those functional interpretations were never confirmed or denied.
But hey at least wotc can explain counterspell and the haregon hop several times over but still cannot admit a beast companion is a player character or other basic questions of the "nature" of the ranger class.
As many do already with 4E, 3.5, 2E, 1E, BECME, BX, and OD&D, and the plethora of wonderful spinoffs and kinship RPGs, I will be playing D14 moving forward. No D24 for me.
All of the "improvements" for the ranger, and other things I've seen so far, are mearly boring and homogenous combat focused changes.
My point in reviving the thread was to show 2014 was a decent player experience.... IF.... the ranger and dm settle the understanding of gameplay elements early
