I have a level 6 Fey Wanderer with an Archery fighting style and the Sharpshooter feat. I plan to take the Piercer feat at level 8.
I'm looking to do a 3 level dip that'll complement his archery. I'm currently torn between Rogue (assassin) and Fighter (battle master).
Which would you choose? Is there another option that I'm completely overlooking? When should I take my dip?
I'm not too concerned about maximizing my DPR. I'm really looking for a dip that'll be fun to play.
For context, my character is an obnoxiously friendly half-elf with questionable judgement. He thinks he may have married an emotionally unstable pixie with a drinking problem that may or may not have recently tried to kill him by feeding him to giant spiders. Unfortunately, the last few months are really fuzzy.
Rogue Scout has good synergies with the Ranger class. Skirmisher lets you scoot away from an enemy without taking an Attack of Opportunity letting you fire away with your bow without penalties.
If your wisdom is 14 or better I would strongly recommend against multiclassing before level 7.
Fey Wanderers are my favorite Rangers and can be one of the strongest martial classes in the game. Beguiling Twist comes online at level 7 and this is a game-changer provided you have the spells to back it. BT is arguably the strongest ranger ability in the game.
Of the two you mention, Battlemaster with Menacing Attack is the best call. Then use menacing attack to trigger beguiling twist if he saves.
If you are not going to go to level 9 in Ranger to pick up Summon Fey (SF gives a bonus action charm every round) I would look at getting some other abilities that cause frightened or charmed. Shadow Touched with Cause Fear, while boosting Wisdom is one good way.
At 11th level Fey Reinforcements makes them the best half caster in the game, at 8th Xbow expert would add more to your damage than Piercer, but if you have 13 cha a 1 lvl dip in Undead Warlock would trigger BT every round, very powerful combo.
That's fantastic. My Wisdom is 18 so I'll hold off until level 8 to start the dip. I plan to pick up at least 15 levels in Ranger because I want my Misty Wanderer ability.

Fey Reenforcements is extremely powerful and is the only way I know of in the entire game to bypass concentration.
Each Fey is powerful making a decent attack and casting the equivalent of a charm monster every turn, the charm ability makes it very difficult to kill them. At 11th level if you summon one every turn at the end of round 3 you and your Fey are going to me making 5 attacks, casting 3 charms and one more charmed or frightened if someone saves and that is before you even use your bonus action.
If you have a 13 Charisma Undead Warlock is the most powerful multiclass of all. I think it is more powerful with a 13 charisma than with a 20 charisma because the BT charm/frighten is better than the Form of Dread Frightened, so you want him to make the save so you can twist it.
As you move up in levels as a ranger spell casting becomes more and more important, rogue slows your already slow spell progression same really for warlock. A 3 level dip into sourceror gives you 4 cantrips, 2 L1 spells, 2 L2 spells and 3 caster levels instead of 1 allowing you to get 2 L5 and 1 L6 slot at L20 at the cost of a couple of HPs and your L18-20 ranger abilities that you were going to give up anyway. In addition you get 3 sorcerer points and access to a little metamagic as well as the subclass features from L1-3 for the type of sorceror you choose.

I thought about taking crossbow expert but Hallion (my character) will likely never use a crossbow, especially a hand crossbow. I'd also like to grab Elven Accuracy at some point. Should I grab this feat next instead?
Hallion just received an oathbow that he's attuning to. It's unlikely he'll ditch it any time soon. He's currently carrying a +1 dagger as a side arm and will pick up a shortsword as soon as he can.
The key part of the crossbow expert feat is not the extra attack with a hand xbow or the ignoring the loading property for x bows, it’s this: ”Being within 5 feet of a hostile creature doesn’t impose disadvantage on your ranged attack rolls “ This is quite powerfull for any ranged primary combatant.
Same. I've been workshopping/theory building a character for while now and I just can't seem to get it to work. Like I want a Fey Wanderer for the martial abilities and flavor, but something like a Wild Magic Sorcerer for the spells and ofc the chaotic wild magic. The spells are very important because while the higher level Fey Wander stuff like Beguiling Twist, Summon Fey, and Misty Step are absolutely great it doesn't have all the spells I need. The character is inspired by Alice In Wonderland so I need spells like Enlarge/Reduce, Spray of Cards, House of Cards, Animate Objects, hell even spells like Warlock's Flock of Familiars so I could bat them at enemies with a croquet mallet, or Cleric's Heroes Feast would also be cool, but those are the only spells from those classes I could see myself using. Hell, maybe even just being able to use something like a customized Wild Magic table with effects resembling the spells might be awesome, but so far I haven't found any feat or ability that does that. I'm probably gonna have to compromise and go full in on Fey Wanderer and lose the spells, or go full in on Wild Magic and lose the martial abilities and flavor of Fey Wanderer which I really, really don't wanna do.
By level 8 rangers are starting to transition from martial centered to magic centered so you might want to look at bard as second class using the magical secrets to pick up spells you want not on the bard lists. At the high end R8/B12 would have spell slot like a L16 full caster, L2 ranger spells, and L6 bard spells

If you put 8 levels in Fey Wanderer you are going to have good martial abilities.
What you describe above is easiest to achieve with a Sorcerer multiclass.
Here’s a thought: hexblade warlock, pact of the blade. Hear me out, you can deal more damage, improved crit, and eldritch blast. But you must take the improved pact weapon invocation, so you can have a bow or crossbow as your pact weapon. You also get access to cantrips :). So it patches up the things that make ranger not fun to play. I hope this is what you are looking for!

I don't think this is ideal with a Fey Wanderer. I think this works a lot better with Rangers that are more martial focused and would run a lower Wisdom.
With a Fey Wanderer, the Warlock play is Undead, because of the Synergy with Beguiling Twist. You can still take Pact of the Blade with an Undead Warlock

My character's stats are currently STR 10, DEX 18, CON 16, INT 11, WIS 18, CHA 17. The undead warlock dip likely won't mesh well with his backstory.
