I’m new to DND, and I’m trying to figure out the mechanics of planar warrior. During my turn I choose an enemy to attack with my longbow. My question is, on this same turn does my longbow’s damage become force damage with the additional extra 1d8 force damage from the attack? OR Does the bonus action occur the next time I attack? Are there any good strategies on using planar warrior?
Planar Warrior is "The next time you hit that creature on this turn with a weapon attack," so every turn where you want to use this, you have to use your bonus action to set it up, which is unlike Slayer's Prey or Dreadful Strikes or Gathered Swarm.

On your turn you can take an Action, and if you can take a Bonus Action if you have an ability/spell/etc that uses your Bonus Action. For Rangers, several of their spells are cast using their Bonus Action, and for Rangers with "pets" like the Beast Master or Drakewarden your Bonus Action is often used to command your pet. Most of the time in combat you'll be taking the Attack action, which lets you make a weapon attack and once you reach Level 5 it lets you make two weapon attacks. So let's say you're a 5th-level Horizon Walker Ranger. To use Planar Warrior, you need to choose your target using your Bonus Action before attacking. Think of it like calling your shot in pool("Hobgoblin, corner pocket"). For the duration of this turn, that's the target of your Planar Warrior ability. If you make a weapon attack on this same turn, the damage type changes to Force, and you deal an extra 1d8. The ability only triggers once per turn, so if you hit your target with both of your attacks, the second attack just deals its normal damage amount and type. If you miss with the first attack but hit with the second, the ability triggers on that second attack since it's still on the same turn. Once your turn is over, the ability is "turned off", so you can't trigger it by making an Opportunity Attack or some other attack on another creature's turn. On your next turn, you can do this all over again with the same target or a new one, but you have to use your Bonus Action again to activate it and choose your target.
It's a pretty nifty ability. It's not a spell and it doesn't require your Concentration, so you can stack it on top of things like Hunter's Mark, Hail Of Thorns etc. The only caveat is those spells also need your Bonus Action to activate, but the effect of them extends beyond the turn you cast them on. So for example on Turn 1, you could cast Hunter's Mark on the Big Boss and start attacking. On Turn 2, you can then mark that same target with Planar Warrior, and not only can you get the bonus damage from that ability on one of your attacks, but you still get the benefit of Hunter's Mark. That's one downside of Rangers, they sometimes have multiple things competing for the use of their Bonus Action, so you have to plan for that.
