Hi all, my new campaign is starting up soon and I want to know what to dip in multi-classing. Now I'm seasoned enough in 5e to know the do's and don'ts with multiclassing but I want to know which way to fall on the two options of either rogue thief vs assassin.
Firstly my character is a longbow user and the rest of my party is either upclose (paladin, monk, and a druid who likes to scrap) or the 1 other really ranged character being our wizard and myself as the ranger. My current set up is a lvl 8 half elf ranger 5, rogue 3 with elvish accuracy. Next level will bring online alert or sharpshooter. So I know it's subjective but I want to know the community's thoughts?
For assassin you really want a table that focuses on getting you a surprise round. The pally is the most likely to cause stealth problems but between druid and ranger (at least one should get pass without a trace) .... the armor shouldn't be a problem. The other thing about assassin is the extra poison kit proficiency(possibly stackingwith FT or FE). Poisoner builds work well with ranged rangers. I recommend Checking up on the poison section of the dmg.
Now one of my favorite characters to play was a thief rogue multi-class. A thief Taking the healer feat really expands options. It allows thrown vials, healing or trap placement to viablely assist in combat and still do almost normal play. (Just plan around BA)
I am playing a Drow crossbow expert Ranger Gloom Stalker 6, Rogue Assassin 5, and currently a fighter 2. I intend to stick with fighter to build more feats the rest of the way. My Fighting styles are blind fighting and Archery. Hand crossbow for fighting up close and in magical darkness, Heavy cross bow for long range. My 2nd feat is elven acuracy. I'll be adding sharp shooter at my 4th level of fighter, alertness at the 6th level of fighter and moble for the 8th level.
Sooooooo many attacks with the hand crossbow in round one and my party actually wants me to sneak a head and launch a nova round at any boss looking enemy or especially casters. With or with out the fighter levels Gloom Stalker Assassin is fun.

Basically both are do-able.
