I have recently started playing DnD again, I bought the Players Handbook (2014) a while back and I had a Level 7 ranger with Beastmaster.
I am trying to create a new Level 3 Ranger but when the subclass options come up, I only get 1 option "Hunter" is there some update or something I need to do to get Beastmaster? I thought it was included in the 2014 Players Handbook? Do I need to buy the 2024 Players Handbook too now?
What's probably happened is that you've chosen the 2024 version of the Ranger class. Since you don't own the 2024 Player's Handbook, you're only seeing the subclass options from the Basic Rules (which is free, and which everyone has access to).
If you want to use the 2014 version, you'll need to:
Enable "2014 Core Rules" in the Sources section of the Home tab of the character builder. (You may want to also turn off "Core Rules" if you don't want any of the 2024 stuff.)
Go to the "Class" tab and remove the class you've selected.
Add the 2014 Ranger class instead. It's the one under the "2014 Core Rules" heading, not the one under the "Core Rules" heading. (If you didn't turn off "Core Rules" in step 1, both will be available to be selected, and you may need to scroll down to find the one you want.)
Set the level back to 3 on the new class.
If you want to use the 2024 version, you'll need to purchase the 2024 Player's Handbook.
But seriously, either enable 2014 content or i’m afraid you’ll need to buy the 2024 versions. I can’t speak well for rangers, but most classes have improved significantly in their power levels under the 2024 rules with things like default spell lists and weapon masteries. Then again, most of those can be added yourself outside of the game. Just saying.
I'm probably well known for being a supporter of the 2014 ranger so take this with a grain of salt.
Playing with the Tasha's options allows the best ranger experience as you can pick and choose to make what fits your group. some groups think 14 ranger is bad but I say they just don't interact with tits game design. Tasha's is more natural to play and build around. I also loved the more specific stat blocks for beastmaser.
2024 ranger got few of the new toys and the spells are limited more Via nerfs or forcing hunters mark more often (because it's a feature spell). The big range win is people got masteries but most classes get it so I might rather play one of them. The de-powering of conjuring spells as utilities and swift quiver really ruin the ranger tone and fun for me.
My recommendation is 2024 dnd isn't the best roleplaying experience for ranger players. It plays ok but lost its place in the party. Think hard before buying 24 as a ranger. Is it worth it?

Don’t call it a comeback.
Sorry, I had to say it!
