Hello all! I'm sure this has been asked before but I've been searching google for days and I'm trying to find advice on my specific situation.
I'm about to start a game and this is my first time playing Ranger, I haven't gotten to play much altogether. I am playing as a sister to another player and the idea of horizon walker fit with iur desired story and I thought seemed really cool in my head! But I need advice on what to do for later in levels. Basically I wanna be a melee slashing teleporting nightcrawler type. With throwing knives(darts) for quick range attacks and a longbow when I really need thr distance.
I know I wanna multiclass and I'm leaning towards either druid for some more spell versatility or rogue for some cool forest assassin shenanigans. But I face a delima.
I fell in LOVE with steel wind strike. Even if it isn't the best spell in the world it just feels amazing to me! However that means I have to get to lvl 17 in ranger minimum and only leaves 3 levels for another class. At that point is it worth it?
I just want some general advice, opinions, and maybe fresh ideas I haven't thought of.
Chances are you aren't going to get to level 17, let alone 20. I would say take the first 5 levels ranger. Then take either two levels of druid or three of rogue. Scout and assassin would work well for your concept. I would say wield a longsword and shield, or a greatsword/axe as the horizon walker is about one powerful attack. If you weren't being melee, you could take a longbow and focus on that. Longsword and shield would be good, especially if you take dueling fighting style. Hope this helped.

If I don't use a finesse weapon though then I don't get sneak attack which is more damage. Though you have a point I may not make it high enough to get the spell I want. But I wanna still consider it in my plans in case I do.
My DM hasn't decided if they're allowing feats or not yet. We're waiting until level 4 to decide that. I did kinda wanna focus on dual wielding for the cool factor. And with distant strike at 11th level won't really have to worry about opportunity attacks.
It's not really a nightcrawler build, but a nimble dash and slash dual wield build. Technically it's for fighters, but you could tweak it.
You start with variant human go for the dual wielder feat and take two weapon fighting. Double up on raipers (cause nightcrawler did) and go with the mobile feat at level 4 then add the sentinel feat down the road to be a pain in the arse.
If you went fighter by level 6 you'd have two attacks, plus bonus action attack while dual wielding, and then a reaction attack (if triggered) from sentinel while not taking opportunity attacks. You'd essentially dance through the battlefield like a whirlwind of blades.
Add in action surge and I'm pretty sure you're DM would ban you. =)
Lol that does definitely sound interesting. Just dancing and slashing, which is effectively what my ranger will be doing before she gets teleporting. I'm still unsure if I want to go with some druid to try and get a bit more spells. That or a magic initiate feat later if my DM allows feats.
I just want more planar spells for my planar warrior lol.
Just thought I'd share my current Ranger see if it helps.
Strength based horizon walker with 2 levels barbarian after level 11. Carry a two handed weapon and maybe hand axe for throw. Getting the Mobile feat is what really brings it together.
I just saw this. I know that it's a bit late in the game to be bringing this up, but TWF and Planar Warrior conflict with each other using your bonus action. You won't be able to do both. I'd really, really recommend against TWF, even though I tend to personally be drawn to TWF characters.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
This is old, sadly I'm not playing in the campaign I made this character for anymore. I would like to play her one day though. My main focus was Distant Strike, which was available at 11th level.
Though access to the Steel Wind Strike spell at 17th level would be great too, I'm willing to sacrifice that for a build that really lets me teleport around and dual slice people to death lol.
I'm playing a melee Horizon Walker, and I'm going to take at least 3 levels of Sorcerer for the Metamagic buffs. If he makes it to Level 20, twinned teleportation circles (if I can convince the DM it should work that way)!

If rogue, then take rapier and shield.

Ranger two or three then Rouge one then back to ranger IMO. I'd also take the mobile feat or the swashbuckler subclass.
That way you'll zip around the battlefield without taking opportunity attacks.
I also got a dual weilder build that'll fit that nightcrawler slashing around the battlefield character idea.
What race have you chosen? May I recommend variant human?

I'm curious what your nightcrawler build is.

If no feats are allowed swashbuckler rogue. It's really good! Alternate timeline Nightcrawler did have a swashbuckler vibe now that I think about it.

Hey, Vex! How many levels in ranger do you need to take to get out of it what you want to get out of it?
