Hi! Playing with a new group with some newer players. I was told the campaign was going to include a lot of investigative work with bits of combat here and there. Normally I like to pick my character last to fill out gaps in the party (not specifically combat but also exploration gaps)but I didn't have much time to give it thought and focused on the investigative part. I'm sure it will be fine, but I wanted to figure out the direction I could take this in. The party is a warlock, sorcerer, and two rogues (me being one of them). I wanted to play inquisitive rogue as a detective but I'm a little skeptical on combat as we don't really have a front liner. Thought I'd do some sort of multiclass with battle-master or knowledge cleric.
I'm not super concerned with dealing uber damage and am more interested in having options outside of combat. With that said, I'd like to be able to stand in the front line and not immediately die. I understand how not optimal this is, but I'd like to try to lean into it and make the best of it.
Realistically, we haven't really started playing yet so I can swap out of my current situation to something else but it could be fun trying to make it work. Rolled stats are 9,10,13,13, 15,16. As of now I'm custom lineage rogue 1 but that can easily be changed.
Put the 16 in str, the 13 in dex, the other 13 in con, the 15 in wisdom and go shield and spear PAM Ranger. Multi with a level of nature cleric to grab knowledge nature. Arcana cleric would get you wisdom based wizard cantrips. I like knowledge cleric to steal expertise skills even if you dump stat intelligence.
I also love a different rogue ranger approach go Scout then multi to Ranger and go Fey wanderer. You will have an absurd amount of skills, 4 from rogue, 2 from background, 2 with expertise from scout, 1 from ranger, and 1 from fey wanderer. Besides the scout expertises you get 2 expertise from rogue and 1 from ranger if you use the Tasha's options.
I keep thinking nature because you don't have that in your party right now.
Something else weird to ponder. You don't have a healer. I am currently playing a custom lineage Phantom with the healer feat. It takes care of a ton of healing. Do the math on the feat yourself if you don't believe me. It refreshes on a short rest as well. The Phantom could help your party because they can pick up any skill needed on a short rest.

Any fun thoughts/advice? Thanks.
