It never states you need to "SPEND" any hit dice. Only to roll it for healing purposes. Which is most of the time gonna be a short rest.
I know this is text prior to "wither and bloom", but that 100% effects this. And something like Second wind effects this. It uses your hit dice as reference and wording.
Only wither and bloom spend a hit die. While neither second wind, nor the Blood Vial say they need you to use the resource of a "hit die".

Could they not be considered temporary sorcery points that will disappear on a long rest?
