I’m working on a Sorlock and got access to additional Sorcerer spells. My idea was to take grease as a level 1 Sorcerer and then multi-class into Warlock for two levels to get agonizing blast and repelling blast. Most Sorlock builds I have read advise taking 5 levels of Sorcerer first, but I wonder if they take these optional spells into account. Another optional spell is Tasha’s Mind Whip I was considering taking over Web. Is this a good idea?
Usually, the idea behind going to 5 is to get 3rd level spells. There’s a huge jump in power at that point. The trick you’re trying to pull off could be fun, but it’s nothing compared to fireball, hypnotic pattern, fly, dispel magic or counterspell.
I see. Would you recommend that I still take grease, web and/or tasha’s mind whip as I get them, retrain them later once I get repelling blast, or just scrap the idea altogether?
No way to know. It’s all going to be campaign dependent. Just remember you’ve got a whole party. When you lay down a grease, it impedes your party’s melee types as much as the enemy, for example. It can be useful battlefield control, but it cuts both ways.
Ok, along that logic: if third level spells are so great, should I go to level 5 on my warlock also before going back to my sorcerer? I already have a weird build in mind of Divine Soul Sorcerer 8/ Celestial Warlock 12 to lean into Pact of the Chain, so I was going to get more anyway. Or is this a bad idea?
Are you sure the campaign is going to 20? Most wrap up in the 10-13 range if they even make it that high. It can be really unsatisfying to plan a build that’s only really comes together at 12, for example, just in time for the campaign to end. If you don’t know, ask your DM if they have a sense of how high it will go.
I did a divinesoul/hexblade warlock, and I can tell you I felt it was a mistake. I wanted to pick up that eldritch blast goodness, but that's not what I primarily wanted to do. What I succeeded in doing, was delaying my spell progression so I had to wait to get the spells I /really/ wanted to cast. In hindsight, for that character, I should have gone straight class sorcerer. There's a time and a place for MC, but you have to look at the entire journey the character plays, not just the end. It's got to be fun, and work the way you want it to for most of the character's progression. MC definitely has a time and a place, but you have to really understand what you are PAYING for that mulitclass. There's no free lunch.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
…I literally just changed mine to a divine soul 18 / hexblade 2.
On one hand it feels like Storm Surge and Wall of Fire become nearly useless without it, but then again I don’t have to take those. It would free up space for me to take disguise self and misty step and change fey touched to actor to do like I wanted to originally with my warlock, but then I would loose hex.
it’s a lot to think about, bit I appreciate your input for sure.
As an alternative, you can pick up hex via magic initiate. It's technically only once per day, but many DMs allow you to cast them with spell slots, particularly since that's the change coming with the 2024 PHB anyways.
That said, as someone who's played a lot of warlocks, I tend to find that hex loses value fairly quickly. I tend to want to use my spell slots and my concentration on other things. I'm currently playing a wizlock (slowing down warlock progression doesn't bother me like it did slowing down sorcerer progression), and even at lower levels (currently 5) I am casting hex less and less, even though I have dedicated 1st level slots I can use on it.

That’s true. Another thing i forgot about is my Divine Soul Sorcerer gets access to Bless just for saying I’m lawful. How does that tend to scale up through the levels?
Right now I’m still 18/2 but i have is set up where I could just not use it if i chose to. The only AoE spell I kept is Reverse Gravity since they’ll be stuck there. I was going to consider Resurrection, but it sounds so expensive. Then again, if I go pure sorcerer I won’t have much to my name but a quarter staff. What’s the economy tend to be like in most games?
As I eluded to before I dropped Storm Sphere and Wall of Fire since I wouldn’t have Repelling Blast necessarily and instead took Misty Step and Disguise Self in favor of the Actor Feat. A wise move?
Bless is always good. When I played the divine soul, it was a go-to spell.

Awesome. I feel like I want to go straight Divine Soul deep down as more of a representation of who my character is, but I really liked the idea of warlocks and multiclassing. There are so many Cleric spells added to where there isn’t much room for synergy with Repelling Blast, and as you said it just delays stronger spells at that point. The Aberrant Mind Sorcerer gets Ivars Black Tentacles, Web, Tasha’s Mind Whip and even Grease to use in conjunction with Repelling Blast, but it does limit what teammates can do, delays the leveling process, doesn’t vibe with my character and finally is basically just something I found online rather than my own creation. I mean, I take notes from multiple sites, but still…
My general opinion is the multiclass option is better at 20 but worse every level along the way that it took to get there, unless you wait until 18 to do it.

That’s true. Guess I should focus on something more short term. Thanks as always for your help!

Depends on the class, combination, and goal.
