it doesn't really take any gametime, you let the DM know your plan, and they let you know if you got the full 8 hours or not. don't get me wrong it is one of the reasons i think elf meditation was a bad game design choice. but you can exploit this all you want, and in the long run you would still be better off if you had just played any other arcane caster.
