If you had to choose only one, which one would you pick?
I just leveled up and I have both Hunger of Hadar and Sickening Radiance. I was considering dropping Hunger of Hadar for another spell. Hunger has been great, as it does 2d6 damage without a save, and possibly another 2d6 after that. You can't see the targets inside, however, even with Devil's Sight.
Sickening Radiance has a larger radius, and the exhaustion and invisibility canceling effects are great, but if the creature succeeds on it's save it takes no damage or effects. The 4d10 damage and exhaustion are great when they work, however.
I think dropping Hunger of Hadar is the right choice, just looking for another opinion. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Why can you not see inside the spell Hunger of Hadar even with Devil's Sight? Maybe I am missing something but I don't see any notations about it that suggest you cannot see inside of it, just that the creatures inside are blinded.
More to the point however is that I personally find Damage/Debuff combination spells to be highly effective even at low levels. Hunger of Hadar is useful immediately in combat situations (or creepy social situations), but Sickening Radiance by virtue of its duration alone has uses both in and out of combat and persists if at disengagement (technically). I will say gauge either spell's intended use versus how often you run into a scenario that you would benefit from either one of them; dropping Hunger of Hadar is not a bad choice since you're replacing it with another Control/Damage spell.
Thank you for the reply. I agree that the benefits of SR are great. As for your question regarding Devil's Sight, Jeremy Crawford has weighed in on it:
Devil's Sight is meant to pierce the dark created by a spell like darkness, not the void of hunger of Hadar.
