Either way, you’ll wand the Abjuration Adept feat from Arcana Unleashed. A lot of the spells are what you get naturally anyway as a wizard, but it will allow you to add temporary hitpoints to yourself based on the level of abjuration spell you used. You’ll be using these spells support your party anyway, and if you do go Abjuration Wizard you won’t need to use it’s temporary HP features on yourself when you use an abjuration spell.
Diviner Wizard indirectly supports by adding bodies on the floor, and if you can use conjuration spells you can get spellslots back for weaker spells, but to me it feels like you are one class trying to do something else if you go that route, in my opinion.
One last tip: similarly to what I told you before about starting fighter for constitution saving through proficiency, I would do the same thing, but with an Artificer level starting instead (unless you go Bladesinger; then use fighter for the weapon proficiencies). I have been doing these strategies less due to situations where I don’t get as many spell slots late game or delay on things like extra attack, but I feel like this is still a good sacrifice personally. Just remember to use war caster if you want to be able to cast all of your spells while holding a shield.
Howdy. Any tips for creating a Wizard good at support, among other things? (I've only played one caster so far: Light Cleric, really enjoying that).
Looking at Adjurer or Diviner Wizard? Likely with Magic Initiate to pick up some healing?
Thx!
Ritual spells go a long way towards supporting the party outside of combat. Detect Magic, Identify, Find Familiar etc.
In combat Wizards have a large number of AoE spells for battlefield control. Grease, web, sleep, hypnotic pattern may not be as sexy as fireball but they can control or even shut down a battle.
Conjuration spells are my personal favorite as it adds more bodies on your side that can be positioned to have advantage on attacks as well as provide advantage to your party members on their attacks.
Magic Initiate Cleric is definitely an option but your still not the equal of a Cleric. Yes, you may get in a quick Word of Healing or Spare the Dying but that is dealing with things AFTER they've become an issue whereas AoE spells can mitigate or even eliminate things before they become an issue.
Yeah magic intiate cleric is doing it through a standard background (better skills n such than druid for a wizard) but if you're going human and take it as the free starting feat, eiher is fine. Either way, take guidance too. I made a 5.5e conjuration wizard as a backup character (in case my stars druid dies), human, and went with a customizable cthulu background (we have cthulu like aspects in our cyberpunk campaign), mthos investigator with I survived to tell the tale feat and for the feat i got from sleecting human, i went with (cleric) Moment to think, Guidance, and Cure wounds. The healing spell is really just for himself, so i took the higher healing over healing word. I liek taht you get to choose your skills and tool kit.
