i did level of fighter then wizard after that. Wearing armor + shield (with war caster) and shield spell you can be a good tank. You get to be in the front line but still have the utility mage spells (and haste become amazing for yourself). If you go abjuration you also get HP close to a fighter as well.
Go with a Mountain Dwarf, Variant Human, or (my favorite) Half-Orc. Prioritize Str, then Int, then Con, and then whatever.
Start with one Fighter level (make sure you pick up proficiency in Athletics) then add five levels of Wizard, taking Abjurer for your school. After 6th level pick up one more level of fighter. After that is straight wizard to level 20. Have fun grappling things and tossing spells around.
That's the class I've been playing. It's seriously fun every level. You are tankier than the tankiest tank (heavy armor, Shield Spell, False Life, Mirror Image, and Arcane Ward) and are never more than 2 levels behind a single-class wizard. You aren't going to out melee a pure fighter, but that's not your job. Your job is to grab one enemy and ruin its day, and when you don't feel like doing that, you can do everything a regular wizard does. Cloud of Daggers is nasty when you grapple someone and hold their face in the AoE. 5th level overall got a little tedious because everyone else was getting their 5th level stuff and I was still one level behind, but once I hit 6th and got 3rd level spells it was game on. And at 7th level when I picked up my second level of fighter? Fireball, Action Surge, Fireball...forget about it!
Bladesingers, Clerics, Moon/Land Druids and Valor/Lore Bards are all full casters and can all do perfectly fine in melee. Mix and match feats or racial abilities (like Dwarf or Warforged) for better armor if thats what you want, or go Dex build with light armor and finesse.
