What is everyone's opinion with making a cleric of knowledge domain that uses intelligence as its spellcasting ability?
Thematically, for my character it makes a lot more sense. he is a researcher and traveling scholar, who values his knowledge of arcana, history, nature, and religion (These are all the possible proficiencies of knowledge domain and are Intelligence based skills). I see this entire domain as being more about book smarts than worldliness and being preceptive about things around them.
I’d say no. You’re still a priest even though it’s an academic domain. Just like a forge cleric isn’t based on str or con, and trickery isn’t based on cha.
You’re a priest who focuses on knowledge, not an academic who is religious.
Agree with Xalthu. Divine casting is divine casting no matter the domain. It is power derived from faith and a connection to the divine. If you want the mechanics of what you're talking about I would play a knowledge cleric 1/ wizard x.
I still think it’s funny that religion is a intelligence skill. I’m actually doing a cleric 1/tomelock of great old one. His patron tasked him to seek out forbidden knowledge and hide/destroy it
You read my mind. I have created my character previous and I multiclassed him to a tome warlock of a great Sphinx (great old one). Both character and patron are followers of Oghma, but the patron has been tasked and is tasking the character to seek out dangerous/forbidden troves of knowledge and bring it back to him to be protected/destroyed. My dnd version of the storehouse of relics from Indiana Jones.

Intelligence (Religion) is how well you recall facts about religion, such as specific dates, events, and names. It's not simply participating in religious practice.

Religion is a knowledge skill, just like nature. It isn't the "faith" skill, it's your knowledge of things religious.
