So I am playing a character finally after 6 years of DMing, and my character is a Tempest Cleric Scribe Wizard combo so I could do major damage. With Scribe Wizard, I can change the damage type of a spell to another, like fire to lightning. While Tempest Cleric has a channel divinity call destructive wrath which let's me max out the damage on a lightning or thunder attack. Now with this combo is it possible to max out the damage on meteor swarm as it has two damage type, fire and bludgeoning? And if so, could it be done by turning the fire into lightning damage and the bludgeoning into thunder damage?
When you cast a wizard spell with a spell slot, you can temporarily replace its damage type with a type that appears in another spell in your spellbook, which magically alters the spell's formula for this casting only. The latter spell must be of the same level as the spell slot you expend.
I could see ONLY the fire allowed to be changed, As most spell only do 1 damage type. Alternatively I Could see both the Fire and Bludgeoning damage turned into ONLY Lighting. I don't see you being allowed to change it into Lighting and Thunder.
Although, Given your talking about Meteor Swarm I assume it's a high Level game?
Those tend to be a little Goofy. So maybe you're DM will let you do both.
But In the end ask the DM see what they'll let you do .
If someone want to Blast in a high level game once per long rest its fine.
Dealing 240 Damage will kill anything CR18 or less, And Hurt everything higher. Besides most Monsters at CR 18+ have Damage Resistances/ Magic Resistance. 240 Damage At level 19/20 that's fine, hardly a big deal.
Where is the thunder damage coming from? You can only change it to a damage type from a different spell of the same level. So I guess prismatic wall can give you lightning, but I’m not seeing level 9 wizard spells with thunder.
And really, when you have 9th level spells, are you really going to take something besides wish?
Prismatic Wall is what i was thinking.... But if you Ask nicely the DM might let you have Storm of Vengeance I know its for Druids But its on theme.
Why not take Wish ? I've seen it banned at a few tables. Also if this starting as a high level or a Level 20 one-shot wish is a... It can really under cut the narrative before it's had a chance to breathe.
If your DM is letting a cleric/wizard pull in 9th level spells from a 3rd class, then they’ll probably let you get away with most anything.
To the OP’s question, it’s going to be a DM ruling. You can change the damage type, but can you change multiple, overlapping damage types? Assuming you have prismatic wall, I’d probably rule yes, but it’s going to be an DM call, I’d think.
There seem to be some kind of confusion around the damage types that you can change your spells into, using the Order of the Scribe feature. As a result of this, I did some research. Order of the Scribes possible damage types (these types of damage are mentioned one way or another, which is the requirement, in the respective levels of spell).
From what I understand of the phrase "When you cast a wizard spell with a spell slot, you can temporarily replace its damage type with a type that appears in another spell in your spellbook, which magically alters the spell's formula for this casting only. The latter spell must be of the same level as the spell slot you expend", I understand is as the very mentioning of another type of damage (not necessarily a spell that *deals* damage) is enough to allow you to change the spell. If this is indeed the correct interpretation, then the list I have put together above is accurate.
On top of that, if you upcast any spell to a different level, you gain access to any type of damage on the same level of spell. i.e. upcasting Magic Missile to level 6, you can change the damage type from Force to any type of damage in that list of damage types.

This is absolutely not the full list of damage types and also cantrips don't use spell slots.
Fair on the cantrips. However, if you feel like I have left anything out, or missed something, feel free to contribute, rather than say "this is not complete" and then don't supply what is lacking.
I've made and posted full lists before, didn't really feel inclined to do it again while I was on my phone. But sure, I'll review your work, now that I have a moment. Red: Duplicates, Green: Not actually available, Purple: Missing.
To start with, there are 13 damage types. That's the first clue we're missing big chunks from your list as it only features 10 of them. The 2nd issue that pops right to the eye is that you have duplicate types listed for the same levels. 3rd there seems to be a few entries listed that don't actually show up at that level. The 4th, and least of the issues, is your order changes each row. Not only does that make it hard for the reader it clearly has made it harder for you to track which was added to the list.
These are the 13 types in alphabetical order. Acid, Bludgeoning, Cold, Fire, Force, Lightning, Necrotic, Piercing, Poison, Psychic, Radiant, Slashing, and Thunder. The list:
You are correct in that I, with intent, left out the physical damage types.
As for the order of damage types, I didn't focus on that - which of course leads to mistakes along the way. As for the psychic damage on level 3 spells, this occur's from Intellect Fortress, where it is mentioned - and thus, belongs on the list. For level 8 Force Damage, I think I might have accidentally counted a spell of Dunamancy origin. For level 9 Nectoric Damage, there is actually necrotic damage mentioned in the Wish spell, and as such, you have access to necrotic damage at level 9.
I do appreciate you taking the time to order the list and give some proper commentary on it, and I fully understand the desire not to make a list while on the phone. I still, however, maintain that your first comment was ill-spirited.
I didn't include the 3 physical types as I have yet to experience anyone using them - or, even desiring to use them (with 9 years in 5e, that's a long enough time for me not to include it in a list I make).
I have also agreed that your comment was fine, but the way you didn't add anything of value while just commenting on the shortcomings, made your post come off as rather aggressive. Let this be the end of this talk, as further talkings will add no further benefits to the list(s).
Well, I'll just add the the physical types have the added benefit of almost never having anything resist them. So of the options they're actually the best, unless you're specifically fighting an enemy with a type vulnerability.
The few things in the game with resistance to physical damage have resistance to non-magical physical damage. So if you convert your fireball into a bludgeoning ball, almost nothing in the entire game will resist that damage.

I'm sure the DM will let you do 240 thunder/lightning damage once per long rest.

Fair enough on wish.

Use your damage type replacement for resistance or immunity spells too?
seems like the Tasha’s sorcerer metamagic option is similar but actually limits the damage type change to damage dealing spells.

Why did you intentionally not include three damage types, then claim it was a list of all types that you could use?
That sounds like you knew it wasn't the full list from the start. And knew why it wasn't a full list from the start.
How then was my 1st reply not adequate?
