Building an Arcana Domain cleric with a focus on uncovering magical secrets and whatnot. This campaign is low magic, but has a past frought with high magics. Campaign will run from level 3 to about 15 (Yes, I know. Just shy from Cleric capstone!)
At level 1 we get a free feat. I was heavily considering Ritual Caster (Wizard) to pick up Find Familiar and other utility options later. Will I feel underwhelmed by this decision? If so, what fun recommendations would you offer?
In general I find Ritual Caster to be more interesting on a caster without ritual spells. This makes cleric a poor choice since you already have quite a lot already. That said, ritual wizard is always a good choice for the party. Find Familiar is an excellent spell and deserves mention clearly, but there are a number of others at low level that are excellent: Alarm. Every rest you will use this spell. It might never matter, but you will use it. Comprehend Languages. Crucial when you need to decipher cool stuff the DM puts out there for you. Unseen Servant. Really useful for when you want to do things. Can even have some limited combat utility. Identify is great as well.
Long term while 2nd level isn't that interesting, 3rd level (tiny hut, phantom steed, water breathing), and Telepathic bond at 5th can easily make it worth it.
The crucial part I found is making sure you aren't doubling up those rituals with another player. These are useful, but if you have two of you who are ritual casters (pact of the tome, or just shared spell lists) you can regret your decision.
If the campaign is low magic you might not find any scolls or spellbooks to add to your book. Speak to your DM about that.
Yeah, the feat really drops off in value if you're not finding spell scrolls semi-regularly in your game. Especially for a class that can natively cast ritual spells to begin with.
If you're not certain that you'll be able to find those scrolls, you might get more out of Magic Initiate. It's another way to get Find Familiar, but also comes with just the guaranteed versatility of getting two cantrips of your choice that you can use whenever you feel like it, instead of needing to desperately search for not just spell scrolls, but spell scrolls specifically for ritual spells.
