The same as most caster focused cleric builds. Get good wisdom, get some decent con and then either strength or dex. Get some skill proficiency in skills your likely to use and scale off wisdom. Grab healing word and guiding bolt plus either toll the dead or sacred flame. Remember that the only health that actually matters is not being at 0 health, and mainly just cast healing word if someone goes down and otherwise just focus on spamming your cantrips till the annoying things die.
Variant Human, take Magical Initiate Feat (Druid). Take Good Berry (as a life Cleric each Berry should heal 4pts). Take Shillelagh, lets you use Wisdom for to hit and Damage in melee. Have fun.
Depending on campaign. Certainly remembering that you can bring people up to half health without a spell slot is really good. especially if going to take a short rest, can conserve the hit dice you got a little bit. (also a great get party back onto their feet ability) your normal cure wounds is basically a full heal. so it is tricky to use unless someone is about to drop or has dropped.
Good berry us nifty, but after a few levels (and when go super healer/super saiyan via beacon of hope) you are a dm's worst nightmare. Especially if you focus on support and countering abilities.
Otherwise for first level, make use of your favored race's skills a bunch. try to help people flank since you get heavy armor proficiency and a shield. (maybe shield of faith yourself or protection from evil for more defense) help be somewhat a barrier. just because you are a life cleric. Doesn't mean you cant show people a think or two about kicking some ass.
