I'll be starting a D&D 5e campaign soon, first time I've played.
I rolled a Half-Orc Cleric, War Domain. Backstory's pretty classic, part of an orc/half-orc tribe, doesn't fit in, and finds Eldath, showing him there's more to life than wanton fighting and war.
So he's chaotic good, and uses his power to help others and solve conflicts, taking the side he deems most worthy.
Here's my question, does my paradoxical choice in domain and deity matter? Are the two incompatible, and how will this affect my character mechanically later? I've got the RP angle down, unsure about the rules.
Mechanically, it doesn't matter. The final call will be up to your DM though.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
from a lore perspective I would feel they are very opposed. According to the wiki on Eldath:
her dogma was pacifistic, and her followers only resorted to violence in defense of themselves, of their friends and loved ones, and of pools and groves
Mechanically though, the rules say it does not matter. If I were your DM, I wouldn't say no, but I would ask why Eldath would grant you war domain powers when she doesn't believe in violence. Personally, I couldnt bring myself to follow Eldath as a war domain priest. It's a bridge too far for me, but if it makes sense in your mind there are no rules that tell you that it can't be done.

You could wrap it into like a chosen paladin type cleric, something along the lines of "she appeared to you in a dream stating her displeasure with the current state of the world. With some reluctance, she has chosen you to be a sort of champion and blessed you with powers of the war domain to correct what she cannot." Or something along those lines.

Thanks for entertaining this n00b.

Great, thanks for the answer. I got hooked on the Orc Cleric thing but didn't want to nerf myself right out of the gate.

Seems to me a protection cleric, would fit the character idea better.
