I'm currently sitting at lvl 3, Goliath Forge Cleric. I'm wanting to be the party's tank, since the only other melee character is a gloomstalker ranger using dual swords, everyone else being a squishy ranged character. The DM allowed us to start with 1 free feat, so I went with the obvious choice of War Caster. Once I hit level 4 I'm not sure if I should go Sentinel or increase my wisdom stat. my main question is, should I focus on getting that wisdom stat to 20 first or take another feat?
I’d go wisdom. Tank or no, your spells should soon, if they don’t already, outclass your melee attacks. Boosting wis makes spells better, and gives you another one prepared per day.
Sentinel is decent but it has a bit of antisynergy with Warcaster. The speed reduction doesn't happen if you use your reaction to hit an enemy with a spell. They are both still solid feats though.
Wisdom can't hurt, but 20 wisdom is a bit unnecessary for a Forge Cleric, IMO. Your best spells don't really need it. Spiritual Guardians and Spiritual Weapon will deal a teensy bit more damage, Animate Objects is unaffected, etc. I think you can head to 18 Wisdom, then fill out the rest of your character with more interesting and useful feats.
Alternatively, you can grab two half feats at levels 4 and 8 to eventually reach 18 Wisdom. Fey Touched is a great choice for a tank, as you lack mobility and need to be able to get to your allies to protect them. Other options include Observant, Shadow Touched, or Chef.
