Pre-order bonuses aren't good. It punishes new players who come in after the fact, as well as those who are waiting for the next paycheck. I bring a lot of new players into D&D. It would be much better to do a "deluxe" or "add on" version for another $5-$10. This is still cheaper than the physical books (well maybe not off amazon).
I was planning on pre-ordering but got dates mixed up, my fault sure, but now i'm hosed on those bonuses.
If you're talking about Van Richten's, it was on pre-order for a very long time and it was pushed very hard by Beyond as was Candlekeep before it. Pre-order bonuses are a means of generating interest early on and drive sales. I can't see DDB ditching this any time soon.
Also, what would a 'deluxe' version look like? If it was $5 or $10 more, you'd have people complaining that they'd been priced out of the market, etc., etc. and I certainly wouldn't pay $10 for some extra backgrounds / frames, so you'd then be down the road of having 'exclusives' in the Deluxe, which would create a massive storm, if the kerfuffle about Subscriber Bonuses is anything to go by.
There's no 'punishment' for missing out on the pre-order - except for some cosmetic stuff, which doesn't detract from playing the game at all, IMHO.
With the rollout of the monthly subsrciber perks, all old preorder bonuses are now possible to obtain in the future as well. Not necessarily on demand, but for a "completionist" (like myself), it's certainly gratifying being able to gain access in some way or another to missed goodies from earlier products.

Why make customers miss out for any reason?

Pre-order bonuses are in general a cancer in my opinion, rewarding unfinished work and creating fomo.
