Some characters, often Artificers, are built around tinkering and experimenting. Tinkering often requires material stock, such as bars or rods of various metals.
I don't own the Dungeon Master's Guide, but external sources on the internet (purveyor of only true information) such as https://olddungeonmaster.com/2016/12/06/dd-5e-weights-of-materials/ imply that there are at least the beginnings of rules for bulk material weight and cost in the DMG.
It would be awesome if those could be tracked as standard, quantified items in D&DBeyond.
