I like to buy the physical books as I find it easier to consider all my options. I would love to be able to recognise that I have purchased and can use this content on d&D Beyond as the character sheet interface is great. Can we make that happen some how?
It's not possible to have D&D Beyond recognise a physical book purchased anywhere other than from Wizards of the Coast directly (through either the D&D Beyond marketplace or dndstore.wizards.com).
Physical books do not have unique identifiers and there are many books still on shelves that were printed before Wizards of the Coast even acquired D&D Beyond
If you want digital and physical books, you have to pay for both. There is no way around it. Unless explicitly advertised, purchasing a physical book anywhere else would not entitle customers to a digital version, and the same applies here. As a GM who has both digital and physical books, digital books are far superior for running a table as they come with a lot of digital tools, so if you can only go with one or the other, I personally recommend going digital. Ideally, if you can afford it, you can run a mix of both, which is what I do, but I use the physical stuff to supplement my digital tools. You can go full physical as well, but the physical tools are either poorly thought out or incomplete, and they do not come with the physical book so those will be additional purchases. Personally, going full phsyical is unpleasant and it is not for me.
Before you buy anything on D&D Beyond, please check out Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, and Foundry and see if they fit your needs better. Again, if you want digital versions on any of these platforms, you will have to pay for each separately as well.
D&D Beyond is very accessible and has a really nice UI, so it is great for new and casual players. However, there are various issues with the platform the deeper you get into D&D, with various main and optional rules that are poorly supported or not supported at all, and lacks many advanced features that other digital tool sets have. Additionally, D&D Beyond is only for D&D 5th Edition, so if you want to explore other D&D editions or even other TTRPGs, you will want to go with the other digital tool sets instead. Please do your research and try out all the digital options before you commit to any one of them.
