I recently came across this issue multiple times. I created some campaigns for both online and offline one-shots with varying players, some of which I acquired through forums or other rather anonymous ways. In these one-shots, I offered pre-created characters to my players as unassigned characters. The players accordingly claimed these characters and played them during the session. Afterwards, I lost contact with most of them, certainly, I lost track of whose DnD-Beyond character name matched which player and so on. Now, I don't have any way to get my self-created characters back. I wish DMs in Campaigns had the "unassign" button as well. At least for Characters, that were created by the DM or another account.
For upcoming one-shots, I create all prepared characters in my own character menu and only join the campaign with copies of these characters. However, for my 'lost' characters, I have to manually copy them step-by-step which is rather painful.
Of course, I acknowledge that I could have prevented this suboptimal situation by advising my players to unassign their characters themselves. This is something I simply have to remember in the future.
Although, maybe I am not the only one who runs into those kinds of problems? Would a button take much effort to implement? Why isn't it there in the first place (I sincerely couldn't think of a reason other than the space of the button menu)?
Thank you for reading my feedback. I would be happy about a response. I'm still learning and curious about other opinions and experiences on this matter.
