There is no reason rules-as-written that Kensei monks should not be allowed to choose a firearm as their kensei weapon. There is no option to do this in DDB that I'm seeing short of making a copy of the class and adding it myself. It would be really nice to just have a toggle in the builder that would allow us to add these weapons as options if the world being played in supports firearm proficiency. Another way would be to allow us to mark our kensei weapons similarly to hexblade marking its weapons in the sheet rather than the builder to accommodate a full weapon selection since the sheet itself is how you add firearm proficiency as well.
Edit: I'm not sure I can even homebrew a solution since the Kensei tag is limited to what it is currently and doesn't allow a change to grant additional weapons to the list. So this is really something that can't be supported currently.
You're actually kinda right and not. In the section in the DMG they're listed in, they're martial ranged weapons but they're not covered by the same proficiency as martial ranged weapons. However, if you search for them in equipment listings, they'd down as Firearm Ranged Weapon
I think the issue here though is that DDB has them under a special listing that is different from the DMG, which technically makes this a valid "rules bug" because it's not raw. Maybe someone should pester Jeremy and see if his answer could prompt the team into action? :)
It’s up to you to decide whether a character has proficiency with a firearm. Characters in most D&D worlds wouldn’t have such proficiency. During their downtime, characters can use the training rules in the Player’s Handbook to acquire proficiency, assuming that they have enough ammunition to keep the weapons working while mastering their use.
This isn't much different from any other weapon. It doesn't specifically say they wouldn't be proficient if they had a general proficiency with all martial weapons, but I agree it might have special consideration under normal circumstances. However for the Kensei Monk, once you pick a weapon; you automatically gain proficiency. At least this is my conclusion from RAW.
I think if my DM told me I needed to spend downtime to master the weapon (even as a monk), I wouldn't object. However, it should still be a pick-able choice all other things considered.
I'm running into a similar problem, I am a drow Kensai Monk (lvl6) multi class ranger (lvl2) and playing in the Rime of the frost maiden, and I got a laser rifle, which I used a rest to meditate and make it my kensai wpn but I have no way of adding it on here.

The reason, rules as written, is that firearms are [Edit] optional
not martial weapons.Factoring that, it makes sense.I do understand your complaint though, that in order to house rule them as martial weapons, you need to homebrew a bunch of options around that.

The DMG does specify them requiring a separate proficiency, but otherwise does not differentiate them from other martial ranged weapons.
Well to be fair:
