I have run into the issue of having a source book in print, but not on DNDBeyond... can I get into trouble if I create a homebrew for the material I want to use in my campaign and not purchase the DndByond material?
It's fine if you do not publish it. You're completely free to copy in any official or third party material using the homebrew tolls, but it must remain unpublished.
It is totally okay and encouraged to use the homebrew tools to make copies of the material in your physical books for private use. As long you do not publish your homebrew copy, you are okay.
You do not need a subscription either to share your homebrew copies. You, your GM, and your players just need to be all in the same campaign, and everyone's homebrew will be shared automatically with everyone else.
This honestly sold me on subscribing to dndbeyond. i can buy digital copies of tools for ease of use but also for my growing collection of physical books that i dont want to re-purchase, i can submit them as homebrew. and as stated prior, since it's shared with your campaign party automatically, it's a win win. i can keep buying books and just submit them myself for personal use. everything is fair :D
