While I don't mind having a dropdown for existing subtypes, sometimes I have personal subtypes for my homebrew stuff, so it would be nice to be able to throw in my own arbitrary strings, when applicable.
DDB doesn't support any kind of homebrew that isn't already discussed in the DMG, which are the options currently available for homebrew. Chances are very slim any other category of homebrew will ever be added. We've been waiting for custom weapon types and adding homebrew languages to the list in the builder for years.

Leaving OGL 1.0(a) untouched and making SRD 5.1 CC-BY-4.0 is a great first step. The next is a promise to do the same for future editions. Here's a discussion thread on that.
