In a weird way, he didn't actually say that the revised ranger wouldn't be in Xanathar's Guide. He did explicitly say the magic-less ranger wouldn't be, but his comments regarding the other ranger revision would still be true even if it did appear in the upcoming Guide - since it will have seen more revision since its last UA version before it gets into our hands, which is all he actually claimed.

The most memorable stories always begin with failure.
It's not even "wishful", as I am entirely ambivalent about the revised ranger.
It's just adding a touch of optimism while I can because I'm not emotionally invested enough to have that affect my interpretation of what seem to be very cautiously-worded statements. Because I know that when someone wants something bad enough, anything short of an absolute "Yes" to them getting it sounds a lot like "No."

Hey buddy, lots of wishful over here! lol j/k
But I think I have the UA ranger in almost every one of my campaigns, and those players can't really use Beyond until it is, in some way, a part of it.
I hope you are right

So, late to the discussion. Is Revised Ranger not available under the "playtest content"?
Only 2018 UA is available through DDB. Revised Ranger is "out of the playtest cycle" and has been dropped by the WOTC design team. They are working on a new direction for the Ranger.
Whelp. Jeremy Crawford has confirmed that the UA Revised Ranger will NOT be coming out officially in Xanathars (https://twitter.com/JeremyECrawford/status/901872761038979072). Now we really need access to this stuff in the character builder...
well that sucks. one of the best revisions they've made, and they didn't get it finished in time for the big release book. I has a disapoint.
Okay I'm over it, but yes, this does mean we really really need to be able to enter our own homebrew archetypes or have it included.
The most memorable stories always begin with failure.
Aye. The inability to use a homebrew class is making it tough to use this at the moment. :(

I applaud your wishful thinking!
