I often add NPC character sheets in campaigns- they sometimes join combat, but come and go as well. Creating an encounter when I have 15+ NPC sheets becomes tedious as I have to click "Hide from calculation" 15+ times every time I want to make one.
There should be a checkbox in the Manage Characters modal popup "Hide [Unclaimed/Inactive] Characters" that batch removes them from the difficulty calculations / encounter.
But in the meantime, i have a work-a-round you may wish to try. I 'deactivate' my NPCs, and only 're-activate' them when they are needed. That way players can't see them, and they don't get auto-pulled in when building encounters.

Have played every version of the game since Basic (Red Box Set), except that abomination sometimes called 4e.
