So one thing I really love about the D&D Beyond Maps tool is the ability to just add player tokens from my campaign, but one annoyance with this is that some players give full names that take up a lot of space on a token's label.
Fortunately we can now rename tokens, but this means the DM has to do this every time they setup a new map for the player(s) with overly long names.
What I would love to see is the ability to add an alias to a player character; this should be a short name, and would default to the first word in a character's name, so "Filius Hempenbrow" would default to "Filius", but I could override it to "Fil" if I want to. This alias would then be used as the name for player character tokens in Maps.
It should be a fairly simple feature to add in theory; one new database field for characters to store the alias, if this is empty when fetching the character's data, grab the first word of the name and return that for the alias. Anywhere the player can currently edit their name, add an icon that can be used to switch between "full name" and "alias", this avoids the need to cram in a second text box for the alias (you just reuse the current one). Meanwhile for Maps it should then be as simple as just fetching the alias instead of the full name.
Not as critical, but Avrae could also do the same (load the alias in place of the character's name)? That might make sense as a character option rather than being the default though.
Former D&D Beyond Customer of six years: With the axing of piecemeal purchasing, lack of meaningful development, and toxic moderation the site isn't worth paying for anymore. I remain a free user only until my groups are done migrating from DDB, and if necessary D&D, after which I'm done. There are better systems owned by better companies out there.
I have unsubscribed from all topics and will not reply to messages. My homebrew is now 100% unsupported.
