I noticed that there were some missing backgrounds when I was creating a character today. Hermit was noticably missing in addition so was the guild artisian and a few more.
Those two background in particular require you to purchase the Player's Handbook, or at least purchasing them separately from the PHB. Without purchasing anything you are limited to what is available from the Basic Rules and the Elemental Evil Player's Companion.
