Currently, there is no ability to mark off Hit Die without taking a short rest. When the sidebar is closed, marked off Hit Die revert to unmarked if a short rest isn't taken. Being able to mark off Hit Die without short resting would be very useful, as it's utilized in a number of ways by the game. For example, the Healing Surge optional rule, Wither and Bloom spell from Strixhaven, and other spells and magic items.

Sigh... Still an issue in 2025...... Lifedrinker problems
This is now also a problem with the Battle Medic feature of the Healer origin feat. You would think they would fix this for the 2024 rules.
