Hows the development going? I'd love to use it for quickly giving character info to DMs on a organized play that I'm working on.

That post is from 2020. Whatever they may have planned at the time, there's been considerable turnover in priorities and also ownership.

If we're going to get an API, it''s going to be after they rebuild the character backend, which they're currently working on. And we may not even then.

Last heard, WOTC has no plans to implement the API suggested by the D&D Beyond company prior to acquisition.  They might implement something different but they haven't made any statements indicating as such.
