WotC official content: Is Galeforce9 still the official partner for all things translated and distributed in non-English-speaking format/countries? I have a hard time navigating their website and finding information What languages have the core books been translated into so far? I know that for instance in Italy the publisher is Asmodee and that they're somewhat behind in translating books and adventures... In previous editions many a book was never translated at all, is this something that might happen in Italian (or in general in languages that have already been partially translated) again with this edition? What countries/languages have translations planned but yet to come out? Is there a minimum set content that must be translated by companies wanting to take on distribution of the brand and the core books?
D&DBeyond: there are a bunch of languages other than English that already have the core books translated. Can we expect this content (that should be readily available to you) to be implemented in the software? Since there are different distributors who, I suppose, are the ones handling the translation, does it mean you guys have to deal with them too, to get permission to publish the translated content, or is there a "mother-deal" with Hasbro/WotC? Would it be possible, to have, if not the content, at least the basic layout of the character sheet translated in the various native languages of your customers, especially those who have manuals (and character sheets) in their language available but would still rather use your software? It's not my case, but I expect that for people who are not 100% fluent in English, having the "naked" character sheet translated would be of some help... even if the content of each area should remain in English. (in fact, I'd appreciate feedback on this idea, because maybe it really makes no sense).
Put simply, not all the players in my group are English literate, and we're somewhat limited if we restrict ourselves to only the books published in Italian, which is what we're doing now.... I would love to buy the books here and subscribe. Not being able to make a great deal of use of most of it is what's stopping me from doing so... as the translations continue and my party keeps buying the books, the opportunity gap for me to go digital is more restricted every day. The longer you wait implementing the content that is available in print in other languages, the less financially viable you make it for those customers who would love to have all their content in digital form but don't want to buy 2 copies of an increasing number of books... and are buying the books as they come out.
I know there have been a number of threads on the topic of translation, but I'm not sure if they're still relevant or out of date, hence, this thread.
the position hasn't changed. As you explained yourself, Wizards of the Coast only publish their books in English - other languages are published by third parties, who license the product from Wizards of the Coast.
I know that staff from Curse have discussed with Wizards of the Coast, about D&D Beyond providing content in other languages, but I don't know what the current status is.
I do know that it's complicated contractually, as Curse would have to license the language translations from the third party publishers, with Wizards of the Coast also being involved. Any agreement would likely need to be beneficial to all involved (or at least not detrimental) so could be tricky to work out. I don't have visibility of what the existing agreements, licensing deals and contracts look like, so just passing on what I have been told.
I figured as much, with regards to the criss-cross of revenue rights with the distributors. How about the character sheet? is that a pointless endeavour or would it be of some use, for it to be translated? also, do you guys have any sort of bird's eye view over what the state of translations is around the globe? or is that something I should ask directly to WotC? or maybe, can the other members of the forum give us the update of the situation in their countries? I'm really invested in keeping up with the publications in Italian, but if half the books aren't going to be translated, like with the previous editions, I wonder if it's going to be worth it, purely from a completionist's standpoint.
