So there was an errata posted in 2018 to the spell, which made features that popped the player back to 1hp when they hit zero work. The current wording and the 2014 ruling does not allow for that interaction. Does this mean WoTC has decided that the interaction does not work since they reverted to the old wording of 2014 Disintegrate, or is this just a DM call or maybe a RAI oversight?
The spell's wording hasn't actually changed in a way that would affect that, but both the 5e and 5.5e versions of Sage Advice address this specific question (here and here respectively) so it seems like the intended behavior has not changed. Features that "intercept" a character dropping to 0 HP and replace their HP value with something else should protect against being instantly killed by Disintegrate in both editions.
