I think what OP means is that for instance, you just purchased only the PHB. When you go to say, the spells section, you get a list of ALL the spells available to X filters. It can become a bit annoying clicking on a spell, not realizing it comes from a resource you don't own, and getting slapped with a "Buy This!" kinda message.
There is a way to filter these things in the spells, monsters, etc, by applying advanced filters and selecting only the source books you own, and I'm not sure about the search function variation of this, but I can see where someone might want something a bit more one-click deal, or for it to be the default.
It's worth noting that there have been multiple requests from the community on these forums to have search show "unpurchased results with a link to the marketplace to buy them."
I suspect that, as with all things, some people prefer to only see what they own and others prefer to see everything available.
When using the listing pages for monsters, items, or spells, you can select a filter to restrict by specific sourcebooks.
Makes sense that people's preference would differ. Maybe add a site-wide setting under user preferences? I'll just use a search for "movement" as one example. It returns results from the basic rules and PHB (which are redundant) as well as other compendium sources (including the DMG and adventure modules) that the user might not have purchased. For those of us who use D&DB as a live resource during sessions, it would be so much better to have quick, uncluttered access to just the sources we own.
Edit: maybe a better comparison would be if every time you search your email, you get ads for Apple products that match the keywords. Gmail does have ads, but it’s not a paid product.
The search feature of DDB isn't a paid product either. Most of the web has ads. Most people who run an internet business where they sell a product advertise their product on their own site. When you go into a restaurant there are ads for food they serve that you may not be interested in. I'm just honestly confused why people think a company would stop trying to sell the product they exist to try and sell.
There has been some mention of updating search capabilities and possibly targeting specific content as well. Example, I toggle to only search within Player Handbook. No ETA but I've seen Badeye achnowledge this request a couple of places.
That would be great! I don’t mind seeing full results if that’s what I’m looking for. But if I’ve bought the PHB and I’m in the middle of a session, those are the results I’d like to see. :)
On the page that loads I click "View Rules Sources"
The next page that loads is a page with graphics of ALL the book covers - including books don't own and I can't filter this. Like a constant sales pitch. I want to see and search ONLY from the books I PURCHASED!
Give us a filter to turn off the stuff we don't own.
Yes, advertising is normal – but it does matter *how* you advertise. When you search in the Kindle app, you see results from your library first. Only then you see “more results from Kindle.” They aren’t mixed together, because the default assumption is that you’re searching for content in a book you already own. It makes so much more sense that way.
This would be SO HELPFUL! The sitewide search is there to help me DM right? Super fast reference for stuff? The sitewide search is really MUCH more helpful if I can quickly get to content that I own. I purchased Xanathar on this site, and searched for 'herbalism kit' and I get over 20 results in the PHB (which I don't own on the site), and I reached the end of the first page of results and I still didn't get the entry for Herbalism kit in Xanathar. Some settings around global search, not just paid versus non-paid, would be great. Just being able to select default compendium sources would be amazing.
A global setting that is there to help eliminate duplicate results would be so so so good.
I want to add my voice in support of this idea. I just now subscribed and purchased a bunch of content. But when I search for something, I would like to filter the results so that any content I don't own (like monsters that only occur in adventures I don't own) shows as gray or at the bottom of the list, or something. I want to see what is pertinent to me first (because I own it), and then be able to scroll down and click on content I don't own as a secondary measure.
A check box for my account to be able to change these settings or something would be great.
Yes please! It really is a pain in the lower parts to add the sources I own one by one every time I'm trying to search for a monster or magic item.
Wholeheartedly seconding the above ideas, I would be happy with a switch, checkbox, or user setting, or even an option in the Sources filter like "Owned Sources" or "Puchased Content" or something similar.

I want to see only my purchased books when I search. Please remove the sales pitch.
I'm not sure what you mean by this. Do you mean remove the Basic Rules etc. content from search if you own the books?

Ah, okay.
Yeah, a one-click option to search only purchased content would be nice. That would also eliminate the redundancy between the basic rules and PHB.

I mean, DDB is selling a product, why would they NOT advertise the product they're selling?

We’re talking about a situation where you’ve already paid for content.
There has been some mention of updating search capabilities and possibly targeting specific content as well. Example, I toggle to only search within Player Handbook. No ETA but I've seen Badeye achnowledge this request a couple of places.

Here is my situation...
I click on Compendium then ...
On the page that loads I click "View Rules Sources"
The next page that loads is a page with graphics of ALL the book covers - including books don't own and I can't filter this. Like a constant sales pitch.

That's it. Sorry I wasn't clear.
Thanks.
I think you were clear. I just think it's kind of insane to tell a company not to advertise their products that you haven't bought yet to you.
