Hi, I'd like to create a homebrew weapon, namely a bladed boomerang. It would seem logical to base this on the boomerang weapon, but it seems I can't remove the 1d4 blugeoning damage from the boomerang, as my weapon would do slashing damage. Could you maybe remove the requirement of a base weapon when creating a homebrew weapon as to allow for unrestricted original homebrew content? Thanks in advance.
The D&D 5th edition philosophy with regards to weapons was to create a much smaller set of weapons, which would be the only set of weapons you would need - anything else would actually be one of the existing weapons, but you'd just rename it.
As you've noted, there isn't a ranged or thrown slashing weapon and indeed there are a number of reasonable combinations where there isn't an existing weapon.
The restriction of using a standard weapon with homebrew is a known one, that has been discussed with staff - I expect there to be changes there at some point, but not sure when.

Which is fine, we can do that, but giving us dropdowns for the damage type and die wouldn't really change that philosophy.
For example, if I wanted to make the bladed boomerang like they noted in the OP, I'd pick Boomerang as the base weapon and in a dropdown change the damage type from bludgeoning to slashing. If I wanted to make this boomerang a stronger weapon than the standard, having a way to specify the number and type of dice used for the damage would be cool too. So, let's say this boomerang's blades are made extra sharp by some ancient dwarven smithing technique that has become lost to the ages, and instead of 1d4 slashing I want it to do 2d6 slashing. I just change the dice count to 2 and the die type from d4 to d6 in a dropdown.
These simple additions would do SO MUCH to allow our creativity to open up while still letting you keep your limited weapon sets philosophy. After all, a greatclub with nails sticking out of it that does 2d4 piercing damage instead of 1d8 bludgeoning is still a greatclub.
Ah, so it is. Someone else had posted on this, which bumped it up. (I don't see their comment anymore). My apologies for not checking the date before replying.

My comment was actually directed at that person. Don't sweat it.

This thread is almost 2 whole years old, and DDB has long since changed their stance on homebrew base weapons and they are planned.
This is part of the reason why it is against thread policy to reply to threads that have been silent for over 6 months.
