I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place but I had a question about the arcane firearm feature for the Artillerist.
Is this meant to replace whatever weapon you are using or is there still value in using a crossbow or other ranged weapon? If, at level 5, I can use firebolt to do 2d10+1d8 fire damage forever, then what is the point of physical weapons any longer? Even a musket doing 1d12+5 piercing is hilariously out performed?
Can anyone shed light on this for me? I feel like I am misunderstanding this somewhere.

Depends on the player and the situation. If the enemy is resistant or immune to fire, that changes things.
Also, you could potentially roll lower (as low as 3 compared to the minimum of 6 for firearm).
But yes, the artillerist is meant to be more of a spell slinger.
